Youth Radio received a 2011 Peabody Award for its investigative report, Trafficked: A Youth Radio Investigation. The George Foster Peabody Awards recognize distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by TV and radio stations, networks, producing organizations, individuals, and the World Wide Web.
Youth Radio promotes young people’s intellectual, creative, and professional growth through education and access to media. Their overarching goal is to instill a long-term commitment and engagement on the part of youth as viable contributors and leaders in the media/arts, journalism and civic life.
In 2006, Youth Radio purchased a 20,235 square foot facility in downtown Oakland in order to expand its operations. The facility was purchased with the assistance of a foundation PRI and a capital grant from Community Vision’s Nonprofit Space Capital Fund. Community Vision also provided them with a $1.15 million in construction financing to convert the former law office into a media center and administrative space for Youth Radio. In addition, Community Vision provided $622,000 in financing to purchase equipment needed to make the facility operational.
Community Vision is proud to have played such a pivotal role in supporting Youth Radio’s growth, in both its new state of the art media center and its outstanding work in journalism.
