Placerville Natural Food Co-op (PNFC) is a member owned food cooperative that provides local, organic food through its natural foods store based in Placerville. Previously known as Noah’s Ark, a natural foods store since 1994, it was purchased by the cooperative in October 2011, whose members include the store’s former manager.
PNFC facilitates a hub for the local food, health, and business communities of El Dorado County. The organization purchases seasonal produce from local farmers and other well-established cooperative natural food suppliers. They also provide free healthy food education classes in its building space and outreach to the community through county social service agencies. PNFC works directly with low-income communities and accepts food stamps.
Community Vision has approved a $100,000 term loan to assist in inventory purchases and cash flow management. With this loan, the organization is able to increase their inventory, particularly seasonal groceries, and health and beauty items to keep up with demand.
The Placerville Natural Food Co-op is a stellar example of an organization bringing economic development to its community by providing a sustainable employment base and business environment for residents. By keeping the business income in the county and providing a source of employment for local residents, the organization promotes the economic viability of small, socially responsible businesses in rural communities.
